Who we are, what we do, and how Travelling Light Ceilidh Band came to be.

Between 1992 and 1994, over £10,000 was raised by people in Bassenthwaite, Cumbria and the surrounding area, to provide a secure water supply for the Leprosy Hospital in Lal Ghad, Nepal. The project was called “Bass Challenge”. Part of this total was raised by a group of musicians playing and calling for Barn Dances – the first one at Bassenthwaite Parish Room. The band was first called “La’l Bass and the Buckets” (water connection!) and after finishing the project the Band continued to provide music for Ceilidhs and other events – for the past 18 years using the name “Travelling Light”.

All funds raised from these events goes towards maintaining the water supply and hospital.

The hospital in Nepal is run by the Nepal Leprosy Mission, based in Richmond, Surrey who list among their objectives:

  • Awareness relating to Leprosy
  • Medical treatment for those infected
  • Improving lives (of those affected by the disease)
  • Empowerment (e.g. providing skills training and working for self-sustainability
  • Networking (with other organisations with similar objectives)
